SUSSEX SEA & AIR: A COUNTY AT WAR

Throughout the Second World War, Sussex played a huge role in the front line of the air war.  Newhaven Fort was a vital element in the defence against the very real threat of German invasion. A coastal radar site was built just outside of the Fort, linked to a large underground naval communication centre nearby.

In the Sussex Sea & Air exhibition, you will be able to learn more about how the skies over Sussex were riven by dogfights during the Battle of Britain and discover how low-level surprise attacks by ‘tip and run’ raiders were carried out.

Discover the depths of the Sussex Sea as the exhibition takes you through naval history from the Victorian era onwards, through the stories of local seamen.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest military campaign in the Second World War, running from 1939-1945. Learn about this significant event in naval history, and why the victory at the Battle of the Atlantic was so vital to Britain.
