After having closed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are extremely pleased to announce that we will once again be welcoming visitors to the Newhaven Fort, from the 19th June 2021!
Following some significant investment in the entrance bridge, exhibitions, and activity centre, we are now able to offer a range of improved immersive experiences to our visitors, from a 6m theatre screen to additional interactive elements and areas for learning across a number of themed rooms.
As well as improvements to the overall visitor experience, we have implemented a number of Covid-19 safety precautions and made efforts to improve access, ensuring that your visit is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
In addition to several brand-new exhibitions, such as the ‘Hidden Fort’ and ‘The History of the Fort’, we have also invested in numerous spaces around the Fort, including the ‘Life in the Fort’ exhibition, which, hosts a Victorian Barrack Room that demonstrates what life in the Fort would have been like.
Centred in the heart of the parade grounds, the Fort’s tearoom has been re-designed to reflect a 1940’s British Restaurant, with a vintage radio mural and quote wall, alongside a large outdoor terrace to enjoy the summer sunshine. Renovations to the Tearoom also include the installation of brand-new accessible toilets.
Newhaven Fort plays a crucial role in the town’s cultural heritage, and so we are excited for visitors, new and old, from near and far, to experience the new exhibitions and enjoy the Fort’s history.
All of the improvements listed have been made possible by a grant of £850,000 received from The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, through the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage.
We have eagerly anticipated re-opening for many months, and we are excited to be back and better than ever, celebrating our 150 years!
With a range of activities and learning opportunities available for all ages, visiting Newhaven Fort makes for a perfect day out on the Sussex Coast.
Please note some of our exhibitions are currently unavailable while works are continuing. However, purchasing your ticket today means you can visit as often as you like through the season at no extra cost.
