Launching the new Barrack Rat Adventure Trails

Meet Lucy, Tom and Mary, three children who grew up in the Fort during Victorian times, at Newhaven Fort this summer. Their job was to help the soldiers by running errands, however, they need more help.

Use the adventure trail booklet to follow in their footsteps as you discover the secrets of the Fort and dress up in Victorian clothes from the dressing up box.

Will you collect enough points on your way around the Fort to become a Barrack Rat too?

There are lots of other things to discover at Newhaven Fort this summer. If you complete a Barrack Rats trail, there are lots more to take you on the twists and turns of the Fort. Just ask at reception for more information.

What’s-On This Summer

As well as meeting the Barrack Rats there are lots of other events happening at the Fort. We’ve gathered a list of the most exciting events and exhibitions that will be taking place at Newhaven Fort to help you plan your summer.

Trench Brothers (4th August – 4th November)

Trench Brothers reveals the hidden stories of ethnic minority soldiers in the First World War. Take an ID card to follow the journeys of soldiers from the Indian Army and British West Indies Regiment through photographs, uniformed model puppets, children’s artwork and audio recordings of their letters home set to music.

To help launch the exhibition we’re delighted to welcome First World War specialist Dr Chris Kempshall with an illustrated talk, The History behind the Trench Brothers Story, taking place on Sunday 5th August at 2pm. Booking is essential. Call 01273 517622 or email to grab your space.

Talks in The Tea Rooms – Trench Life (29th August)

Join the Fort’s Curator for tea and cake to learn about the much less convivial surroundings of the First World War trenches. This session will be hands-on with objects from the Fort’s collection out of storage for the evening and available to handle.

Cinestock Open Air Cinema (18th August)

Join us under the stars on the Parade Ground for an 80’s blockbuster. Arrive early to explore the Fort, learn about the historic location and admire the iconic views of the South Coast as the sun sets in time for the screening. Follow the adventures of Marty McFly and ‘Doc’ in Back to the Future on Saturday 18th August.

Theatrical Ghost Walks (17th August)

Laugh and scream as you join the Sussex Darkside Theatrical Ghost Walks to explore the tunnels and Victorian architecture of the Fort. Meet the resident ghosts Corporal Cornford, Tilly Meeching and Officer’s wife Elizabeth Grieve and hear some of the best ghost stories from other forts around the country.

There’s lots to do and something to interest all members of the family at Newhaven Fort this summer.
