Newhaven Fort isn’t just for the grown-ups! Whilst school is still out for summer our younger visitors will find plenty to keep them amused. Read on below to find out what 10 things you can get up to when you visit.

 

  1. Meet the Barrack Rats

Meet Lucy, Tom and Mary at Newhaven Fort this summer and find out just what a Barrack Rat is! Join them as they run errands to help the soldiers stationed at the Fort. Follow their adventure trail and you could become a Barrack Rat too! Find out more here.

 

  1. Let off steam in the playground

You can climb, hang out and whizz down the zip line in our playground. Why not bring a friend along?

 

  1. Dress Up

Find the dressing up boxes and become a soldier, an evacuee or a Second World War land girl. You might even find your own Barack Rat outfit! Don’t forget to take a photo of your new look. Mum or Dad may even want to upload your photos and enter our Instagram competition using #funatthefort2018

 

  1. Count the steps down to the Caponier

Test your maths and bravery as you descend the Caponier steps. How many can you count?

 

  1. Discover the Trench Brothers exhibition

Visit our new exhibition, here until November, and join in with the special events that accompany it. You can make a poppy, a vintage aeroplane or a First World War trench in our Trench Brothers inspired craft sessions. Find out more about the exhibition and events here.

 

  1. Take shelter in an air raid

Experience what life was like for children during the Second World War and take cover in our recreated air raid shelter! Catch the experience, which runs hourly from 12-4pm.

 

  1. Indulge in cake

Enjoy a delicious sweet treat in the Tea Room. Capturing that 1940’s feeling, you can imagine what afternoon tea was like for your great great grandparents!

 

  1. Top of the Fort

Race to the top of the Fort, look out over Newhaven’s coastline and admire the amazing views!

 

  1. Food for thought

Hungry to learn about what people ate during wartime? With limited food available during the war families got creative and tightened their belts. Learn more about what people ate in the Home Front Exhibition. Challenge yourself, and the rest of the family, to guess what rations were available; would you eat what was on offer?

  1. Visit the Gift Shop

Everyone’s favourite last stop at any tourist attraction! Take a look around the gift shop, there’s something for the grown-ups in there too.
