Spitfire and Jiving at Newhaven Fort
In 1940, with the future of Britain in the balance, the Luftwaffe and the RAF fought in the skies over South East England. The Battle of Britain was a prelude to the planned German invasion of Great Britain which they later abandoned, thanks to the efforts and triumph of our Royal Air Force.
On Sunday 17th September Newhaven Fort is proud to host its annual Battle of Britain event. The gates will open at 10:30am and will feature a programme of special events throughout the day.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly their Hurricane & Spitfire planes direct from Shoreham for a spectacular flypast over Newhaven Fort*. The view from the ramparts is always breathtaking, and as the hum of the planes’ approach can be heard, visitors can almost reach out and touch them as they fly right over head.
The entertainment will begin with a concert by the Seaford Silver Band, playing wartime favourites throughout the morning. From 1pm, the Brighton Jive Dancers will be performing a nostalgic and lively dance display, creating the perfect 1940s atmosphere.
Military vehicles will be on display in the parade ground and a re-enactment society will be situated in the Grand Magazine displaying a hospital, command post and troop shelter throughout the day.
The annual women's land army reunion will again take place at the Battle of Britain event. The WLA members will travel from all over the South to meet with old friends and colleagues.
As always, Organic and Fair-trade refreshments will be served in the Searchlight Café. Tickets are priced at £5.50 for adults, £3.60 for children, plus concessions and family tickets are also available.
