Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Newhaven Fort
In 1940, with the future of Britain in the balance, the Luftwaffe and the RAF fought in the skies over South East England. The Battle of Britain was a prelude to the planned German invasion of Great Britain which they later abandoned, thanks to the efforts and triumph of our Royal Air Force.
On Sunday 16th September Newhaven Fort is proud to host its annual Battle of Britain event. The gates will open at 10:30am and will feature a programme of special events throughout the day.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be the highlight of the day as their Hurricane & Spitfire perform a spectacular flypast over Newhaven Fort*. The view from the ramparts is always breathtaking, and as the hum of their approach can be heard, visitors can almost reach out and touch the planes as they fly right over head.
The entertainment will begin at 11am with a concert by the Seaford Silver Band, playing wartime favourites. In the afternoon, the Brighton Jive Dancers will be performing a nostalgic and lively dance display in 1940s costume, creating the perfect atmosphere. Audience participation is encouraged!
A re-enactment society will be situated in the Grand Magazine displaying a WWII First Aid post, troop shelter and a command post throughout the day. Actors will be dressed in period uniform and will be present to answer any questions about their display.
The annual women's land army reunion will again take place at the Battle of Britain event. The WLA members will travel from all over the South to meet with old friends and colleagues.
As always, Organic and Fair-trade refreshments will be served in the Searchlight Café. Tickets are priced at £5.50 for adults, £3.60 for children, plus concessions and family tickets are also available.
