Newhaven Fort Day, Sunday 3rd June
For the past three years, Newhaven Fort has held a one-day event to highlight some of the various roles it plays in its guise as both a visitor attraction and an important community resource.
On Sunday 3rd June, Newhaven Fort Day 2007 will host a range of different activities throughout the day including the Royal Observer Corps AGM. Members will remain on site to answer any queries visitors may have relating to the exhibits and the ROC itself.
Sussex Police’s Explosive Search Dog Unit use Newhaven Fort as part of their training programme and will be attending Fort Day to display their skills in the Romney Hut. The dogs will be re-enacting how they would detect dangerous, hidden substances, from 12:30pm. Audience participation is possible.
Between 13.00 and 14.30 there will be live music from Vintage Hot Five playing war time classics and at 14.30, Geoff Bridger author of ‘Valiant Hearts of Ringmer’ and ‘The Battle of Neuve Chapelle’ will be presenting a ‘Reality of War’ Lecture. Geoff Bridger researches aspects of the Great War and will give a brief talk about what life was like for a soldier in the trenches. Items and equipment found on the battle field will also be available to view. To guarantee a place on the free lecture, please call Newhaven Fort direct on: 01273 517622.
Of course, all of this is in addition to the many fascinating, permanent displays and interesting things to do at Newhaven Fort and, don’t forget, the fantastic on-site café serving yummy lunches and naughty treats, plus the pocket-money-priced gift shop.
Tickets for Newhaven Fort Day are priced at the normal entry fee and can be purchased on the door.

Notes to Editor:
Newhaven Fort is an award-winning visitor attraction, open to the public from March to October. The fort is owned and operated by Lewes District Council and offers visitors the opportunity to experience a day out with a difference, as they step into wartime Britain and follow in the footsteps of people who lived through the first and second World Wars. The massive walls, ramparts, tunnels and gun emplacements all fire the imagination, and the clifftop location offers stunning, far-reaching views across Seaford Bay, Newhaven Port and the English Channel.
Newhaven Fort is open daily from 10.30am until 6.00pm (or dusk, if earlier). www.newhavenfort.org.uk
