British Armed Forces Day to be celebrated at Newhaven Fort

Lewes District Council will be taking part in a flag raising ceremony at Newhaven Fort on Monday 22 June in the presence of the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex in recognition of the first British Armed Forces Day.  The flag has been specially commissioned for the occasion and will remain hoisted until Saturday 27 June.

Building on the success of previous Veterans Day celebrations the Government has announced the first British Armed Forces Day that will take place on Saturday 27 June this year.  The day will be an opportunity for the whole nation to show its appreciation for the contribution made by all those who serve or who have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.  The title Armed Forces Day reflects the wider Armed Forces family of serving personnel (both regular and reserve), veterans and cadet forces.

Councillor David Gray, Chair of Lewes District Council said “We can all thank a helpful police officer, firefighter, nurse or doctor but the public never really get a chance to say a proper thank you to our armed forces.

I am pleased to be able to offer a 35% discount for any armed forces personnel visiting Newhaven Fort between now and the end of the season in October. All they need to do is produce their warrant cards. This offer is also extended to any other members of their family or party up to a maximum of four people”.
